Letterforms that command attention start with weight. URW Impact delivers exactly that: chunky, confident strokes paired with squeezed spacing that packs maximum visual force into minimal space. Designed by the URW Type Foundry, this display font traces its lineage back to Geoffrey Lee's original 1965 concept, built on a straightforward principle: get as much ink on the paper as possible within a given size, while maintaining a tall x-height.

The technical approach keeps the x-height strong while squeezing down the white space inside letters (those minimal counters), which means even smaller point sizes hold genuine power and presence. That combination made Impact the choice for real-world logos like the St. Pancras railway station mark and the IMDb branding, where strength and instant recognition matter. Decades later, the design still influences how type designers think about bold, headline-focused work.

This typeface thrives on projects that demand visual assertiveness. Concert posters, championship merchandise graphics, sports team wordmarks, and vintage packaging designs all benefit from its uncompromising weight. Designers tackling event signage, gaming promotional materials, or bold branding campaigns find that Impact cuts through visual noise without hesitation.
