There's something raw and direct about this typeface. Roadway, created by K-Type, draws its DNA from the hand-painted lettering found on New York's subway stops and street signage, translating that functional urban language into a modern display font with real personality.

The design operates as small caps, with condensed capitals serving as primary text and regular-width small caps at half size, positioned as a superscript layer. This two-tier structure mirrors the actual practice of New York signmakers, who stacked different letter sizes on a single sign to create visual hierarchy and readability from a distance. The technical execution reinforces this approach: dedicated superscript punctuation (comma and period accessible via the lesser and greater keys, plus a special hyphen that aligns with the superscript baseline) maintains perfect alignment throughout. Because of this thoughtful construction, Roadway excels for vintage wayfinding signage, heritage building markers, urban product labels with genuine character, and retro poster designs that want historical weight without feeling costume-y or nostalgic-in-name-only.

Pair it with a clean, neutral sans-serif for body text, letting Roadway own the visual conversation as your statement layer. It captures the utilitarian charm of mid-century urban design work. You'll find it ready to download from Creative Fabrica.
