Grumpy by Suomi Type Foundry is a bold display typeface rooted in the retro-modern aesthetic of Herb Lubalin's ITC Grouch. The design takes a heavier approach, with notably different glyphs that give it its own strong character while maintaining that vintage typographic spirit. What makes Grumpy stand out is its approach to spacing: it uses TNT (Tight, Not Touching) letterforms, a letterspacing treatment that dominated graphic design in the seventies and eighties. Over 2000 kerning pairs keep the texture even and balanced across the board, so headlines hold together visually no matter what words you set or how they stack.

This typeface shines in contexts where retro warmth and confident visual color matter most. Think vintage poster art, record cover designs, independent magazine headlines, and craft beer labels where that compressed, period-perfect feel adds genuine character and authority. It works equally well for restaurant menus, boutique concert promotionals, and band logotypes that need historical weight without looking overly nostalgic.

If you're working on projects calling for distinctly midcentury display energy, Grumpy lives up to its name with personality you rarely find in modern geometric typefaces. Grab it on Creative Fabrica and start exploring what tight, confident letterforms can do for your next design.
