Imagine designing a poster for an underground music venue or a window display that needs to stop people mid-stride. Billowed, from Ingrimayne Type, is a display typeface built on a playful geometric constraint: each letter is forced into a shape inspired by billowing sails, with alternating concave and convex edges. The result is a typeface that doesn't follow the rules of traditional letterforms, but it does something far more compelling: it creates a visual rhythm that builds with repetition.

The font's real trick is its alternating-character system. Using OpenType contextual alternates (calt), characters automatically swap between two distinct styles as you type, creating a ripple effect across the page. Line it up right (set line height equal to font size, with each line flipped) and you get a dynamic wave pattern that works equally well vertically and horizontally. This makes Billowed exceptional for nightclub flyers, gallery wall signage, experimental band merchandise, and DIY vinyl sleeve artwork. Its monospaced structure and deliberately tight letter spacing lock in that rhythmic quality.

Billowed ships with both solid and outline styles, letting you layer them for added depth and color variation. It's not designed to be the font you use everywhere, but in moments where you need lettering that demands attention and rewards close looking, it delivers something genuinely different.
