Picture yourself working on a wine label or gallery poster and needing something with personality. That's where Stroganov, designed by Oleg Karpinsky and released by ParaType in 2002, comes in. The distinctive feature is irregular serifs that appear on just one side of each letterform. That asymmetry isn't an accident, it's the whole design, and it creates personality without tipping into gimmickry.

The typeface is named after Count Sergey Stroganov, founder of Moscow's influential school of industrial art, and you can feel that design-school heritage throughout. It works exceptionally well for upscale applications: wine and spirits packaging, limited-edition book covers, gallery and museum identities, luxury fashion lookbooks, and editorial design where you need the type to carry real presence. The low-contrast serifs remain legible even at large display sizes, which is why you'll find it succeeding in high-end branding campaigns and magazine spreads.

When you set Stroganov large, those handcrafted letterforms really shine, and the one-sided serifs feel like a considered choice rather than a quirk. It's that artisanal quality that makes designers return to it again and again. You'll find it's especially useful when you need display type that reads as intentional and thoughtful.
