The optical trickery in Priori Acute, designed by Jonathan Barnbrook's studio for Emigre, comes from its layered, folding geometry. This newest member of the Priori family reads as relatively straightforward at first glance, but transforms into something far more intricate when you examine individual characters, playing with impossible perspectives that recall both modernist grid logic and the spatial games M.C. Escher explored.

The design mines 19th century display typefaces for historical reference but avoids visual shortcuts like embossing or drop shadows. Instead, each letter twists and shifts across multiple planes, with angles that echo architectural experiments like those on a Stealth fighter jet. At typical reading sizes, the visual complexity stays subdued and the original forms remain legible, maintaining the British early modernist character of the original Priori. Turn up the scale, though, and each character becomes a dense visual statement. Enlarged, Priori Acute shines for oversized initial caps on luxury book editions, fashion brand poster headlines, custom product logos where letterforms become badges, and premium packaging design where typography carries the visual weight.

This is the typeface for people working on moments where the letterform becomes the message itself. Pick it up from Creative Fabrica when you need a display face with genuine optical depth.
