You're designing a picture book cover and the lettering needs to feel hand-drawn but genuinely polished. The Mike Kunkel font does exactly that, capturing cartoonist Mike Kunkel's actual handwriting and lettering style with all its warmth and character. Type designer John Roshell at Comicraft worked directly from Mike's personal handwriting to build this typeface.

Kunkel lettered his beloved comic strip Herobear and the Kid by hand for years, and Roshell recognized something worth preserving in that distinctive personal mark and voice. Rather than creating something generic or simply inspired by comic lettering styles, he built this typeface directly from Mike's handwriting, maintaining the sketch-like character without sacrificing readability (a balance that's harder to strike than it sounds). The result preserves the authenticity and personality of actual hand lettering while remaining clear and usable at any size.

This font shines on picture book covers and titles, vintage greeting cards, hand-lettered comic strips, and craft labels for small creative businesses or makers. The single weight maintains real warmth at large display sizes, keeping letterforms lively and expressive rather than oversimplified. Get it on Creative Fabrica and add that genuine personal touch to work that deserves it.
