Layering systems built on repeating geometric tiles create depth without requiring post-production effects. SB Optical, designed by SelfBuild Type Foundry, bakes this color-stacking approach directly into its letterforms, offering an SVG color font in black and red paired with two stackable OpenType companions. The complete set contains 365 glyphs per font, providing solid character coverage for typical design work.

The practical advantages of this approach show up clearly across real-world projects. Screen-printed apparel graphics, custom vinyl decal designs, decorative event signage, and professional badge artwork all benefit from having color options ready to layer or customize. Since the layered OpenType fonts let you assign different colors to each level independently, you're not locked into preset combinations. You can pull colors from your brand palette and adjust the look for different versions of the same design. SVG color fonts have solid support now in recent Adobe versions (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), plus Affinity Designer, Sketch, and all major modern browsers, though you should verify compatibility with your specific software before diving into a project. This typeface works best for designers and makers exploring layered color without running into technical friction. Find it on Creative Fabrica.
