Dead History by Emigre is a display typeface born from digital experimentation in the early 1990s, when graphic designers were beginning to see computers as design tools rather than just production equipment. Makela created it by splicing together two existing typefaces (Linotype's Centennial and Adobe's V.A.G. Rounded) into something wholly unexpected, deliberately challenging the notion that typefaces needed to follow traditional rules. The result feels both nostalgic and forward-looking, mixing visual contradictions that make it genuinely difficult to categorize.

This typeface works remarkably well for editorial spreads that demand visual impact, experimental album covers and music packaging where a bit of visual chaos reads as intentional, underground poster design with enough character to carry an entire composition, and provocative book jackets for design theory and cultural criticism titles.
