Some typefaces are drawn to disappear into a paragraph. Cambrian, from designer Andy Li, does the opposite job: it is a display face, built for the moment when one word has to carry a whole layout. Display letterforms live or die at scale, where silhouette and spacing register before anyone reads the actual word, and that is where this one wants to sit. Set it at 12 point and you have wasted it. Give it size and air instead.

The family arrives in a single Regular weight, which suits a face like this: one voice, no agonizing over which cut to choose. Coverage stretches across 89 or more Latin-based languages, so a multilingual campaign holds together once you move past English. I would reach for it on record sleeve titling, craft beer can labels, festival lineup lockups, and title cards for a documentary series, work where the type is the image rather than a container for information. It also behaves well in short bursts on screen: a hero word on a landing page, or a chapter divider in a long scrolling article.

Pair it with a quiet neutral sans for body text and captions, something with a large x-height and no opinions, and let Cambrian own the top of the page. Cambrian is free under the Open Font License for personal and commercial work, and the files download directly from this page.
