Picture yourself designing a poster for a vintage record shop or a cultural exhibition exploring Eastern European design history. That's where KOMU, created by DizajnDesign, finds its natural home. This display font is a careful revival of the chunky, hand-assembled letters that decorated billboards across socialist-era Czechoslovakia. Back then, designers would literally pick individual metal-faced letters from a box and pin them onto foam boards to announce events, each character sized and weighted by hand for maximum impact.

The typeface comes in two distinct flavors. Version A leans into angular geometry with bold, squarish proportions and distinctive marks like a tight E and unusual accents for Central European languages. Version B softens the approach with rounded terminals while keeping widths mostly consistent except for the widening E, F, and L. What makes both versions compelling is the intentional optical disparity DizajnDesign preserved from the originals, where certain letters intentionally read slightly heavier than others, creating that authentic hand-assembled feel.

You'll find KOMU works beautifully for retro event posters, archival book designs, nostalgia-driven packaging for heritage brands, and any project celebrating Cold War-era Eastern European aesthetics. It includes comprehensive Latin-script support for the full linguistic range of the region. The personality is immediate at large sizes, making it ideal for headlines that need to command attention without feeling contemporary. Find KOMU on Creative Fabrica to add that authentic retro edge to your design toolkit.
