1 / 4About Backspacer Font
Backspacer by Emigre is a dingbat typeface built from the authentic character of vintage typewriter keys. Years ago, designers Nancy Mazzei and Brian Kelly discovered an old, weathered typewriter abandoned in a Brooklyn lot thick with overgrown grass. Rather than let it disappear, they carefully removed the keys and spent time photographing each one, capturing the worn metal and faded lettering that decades of daily use had created. Zuzana Licko then scanned and traced these photographs, transforming them into a complete, functional typeface that preserves all the textured personality and distinctive quality of the originals.
What makes Backspacer work across design disciplines is how it brings real typographic history into contemporary projects. Designers reach for it when building vintage-inspired wedding stationery, retro video game interfaces, and steampunk product packaging that need textural depth. The individual key glyphs function beautifully as decorative borders and dividers in print layouts, adding character without requiring additional graphics or illustration work. Crafters and designers working on mid-century themed branding or nostalgia-driven campaigns find the worn character instantly authentic, bringing visual depth to layouts that might otherwise feel too clean or modern.
