About Quattrocento Roman Font

A regional museum needs a catalogue people will read while standing up: essay text on the left page, a pull quote set large on the right. Quattrocento Roman, drawn by Impallari Type, covers both sides of that spread. Pablo Impallari is credited with the design, with Igino Marini of iKern alongside him, and the result is a serif built to sit in running text without calling attention to itself.

That double duty is the useful part. The family is tagged for paragraph setting as well as headings and display, which is roughly how I would use it: 10 or 11 points for museum exhibition catalogues and nonprofit annual reports, then the same face at 60 points for editorial pull quotes and chapter openers in a self-published novel. Two family files come in the download, so you have a companion style on hand for emphasis instead of faking a bold. Coverage runs to more than 216 Latin-based languages, which matters when you are laying out a bilingual conference program and would rather not swap typefaces halfway through.

One practical note on sizing. Serif faces like this one tend to open up when enlarged, so tighten the tracking slightly past roughly 36 points and let the headline breathe on its own. Leave default spacing alone at text sizes and give long paragraphs a bit more leading than feels necessary; the column will read easier for it. Open license, commercial use allowed, download below.
