What Is Character Set?

A font's character set is the full collection of glyphs it contains — letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, and accented or non-Latin characters. A larger character set supports more languages and richer typography. Before using a font for a specific language, check that its character set covers the needed letters.

Basic Latin covers English, but languages like Polish, Vietnamese, or Turkish need additional accented glyphs. Display and novelty fonts often ship with limited sets — uppercase only, or no punctuation.

Beyond language coverage, an extended character set may include alternates, ligatures, multiple figure styles, and currency or math symbols, all of which expand what a designer can do with one file.
